Up in Smoke Exhibition

We are nine students taking the MLitt Museum and Gallery Studies course at the University of St Andrews. Up in smoke: a history of smoking is a group project that will enable us to put the theory of our course into practice by elaborating an exhibition and acquiring professional experience in curatorship.

Smoking has been a hot topic since tobacco was first brought back to Britain from the New World in the 16th century. The perception of smoking has shifted drastically from its heyday in the 19th century to our gradual realisation that it is an indisputable health risk.

This exhibition charts the rise and fall of tobacco through a combination of objects, artworks, literature, advertising and film.

St Andrews Africa Summit 2020: SAASUM

Our small committee collaborates with professors and students to develop awareness of global issues at a local level and to introduce the community of St Andrews to the trends shaping the affairs of this multifaceted continent.

SAASUM aims – through its annual summit – to offer students the ability to learn from and have discussions with people who are leaders and catalysts for change in Africa’s future.

For SAASUM’s fifth anniversary, we are focusing on the themes of leadership, development and entrepreneurship within the context of Africa’s diaspora and its cultural and economic output over time.

PLASTIC: UNWRAPPED

Is a mission involving two biology graduates who are travelling through six continents within nine months from September 2019 to find solutions to plastic pollution. This international project will showcase how individuals and initiatives around the globe are using plastic responsibly as a resource, rather than ignoring the problem.
